Job Type: Full-Time, 40 hours per week
Location: Kitchener, ON (Trillium / Homer Watson Industrial Park)
Department: Electrical Engineering
Reports To: Electrical Engineering Lead
About Mycionics
We are a strong, multidisciplinary mechatronics team where every member directly contributes to the product. We design, prototype, fabricate, and industrialize full robotic systems—spanning mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, AI/ML, and data analytics—and deploy them globally to customers across three continents.
The Role
We are seeking a capable and hands-on Embedded Electrical Designer to help scale our R&D and production efforts. As our product lines—including custom vision systems, robotic pickers, and packing systems—expand into multiple customer sites globally, we are broadening our electrical team to parallelize our design capabilities.
You will work closely with our Electrical Engineering Lead on full system designs, bringing strong independent expertise in custom PCBs and embedded systems. Your core strength should be in electrical design—ensuring the proper integration of electrical components at both the PCB and system architecture levels. While we have dedicated team members for assembly and core software, the ideal candidate is a well-rounded engineer who remains comfortable jumping onto the bench to validate a prototype or test hardware peripherals when needed.
Key Responsibilities
- PCB & System Design: Architect and design multi-layer PCBs and full electrical systems. Past and current projects include connector-to-connector interfacing PCBs for DC voltages (up to 48V) handling substantial currents and laying out high-speed differential signals requiring careful length matching and impedance control.
- Embedded Hardware: Architect systems around microcontrollers, thoroughly integrating various peripherals, memory, sensors, and motor actuators using standard protocols (I2C, SPI, CAN, Ethernet).
- Hardware Validation: Debug and validate newly designed boards using bench tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and meters.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration (Firmware & Prototyping): While not your primary duty, you should be comfortable writing basic test firmware or drivers to verify that hardware peripherals function as expected before handing boards over to the software team. A comfort level with occasional surface-mount or through-hole soldering to test and prove out a prototype is a strong plus.
Technical Qualifications
- Experience: At least 3+ years of in-field industrial experience focused on hands-on electrical and PCB design.
- PCB Proficiency: Extensive general knowledge and a proven track record in PCB design and system-level electrical integration.
- Microcontroller Expertise: A strong understanding of microcontrollers and how to properly access and interface with them.
- Hardware Validation: Demonstrated capability with bench diagnostics (scopes, meters, logic analyzers) to independently troubleshoot and validate designs.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Ecosystems & Tools: Experience specifically with Altium Designer (our current EDA tool) and the STM32 microcontroller ecosystem.
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Experience interacting with board houses, ordering PCBs, and understanding manufacturing design constraints.
- Harnessing: Ability to specify wire harnessing and create detailed wiring drawings.
Who You Are
- A Practical Engineer: You want to see your designs exist in the real world and know how to bridge the gap between schematic theory and physical hardware.
- Cross-Disciplinary Mindset: You understand that hardware and software are deeply linked, and you easily navigate device data sheets to ensure components are integrated correctly for the firmware team.
- A Fast Learner: You have a solid engineering foundation and can quickly transfer your existing skills to new tools or microcontroller families.
